Città della Pieve is on the border between Tuscany and Umbria, between two of the most important regions of Italy as regards the Arts, and geographically it is situated within the province of Perugia.
It is a Renaissance city which is built almost entirely of brick. It has a wonderful city wall which surrounds the city and which includes the entrance arches of Porte S. Agostino, and S. Maria. It houses some beautiful churches such as Cathedral dei Santi Gervasio and Protasio, Sant'Agostino, Church and Monastery of Santa Lucia (Monastery of Clausura delle Clarisse, founded 9 August 1252) and Church of San Francesco. Historic Buildings include: Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo Cartoni, Palazzo della Corgna, Palazzo Vescovile, Casa Canestrelli and Casa del Perugino. Other buildings and monuments of historic interest: Rocca perugina, Vicolo Baciadonne and a science based senior school designed by Mario Botta. Close to the church of Madonna della Sanitá there is an old romanesque building which houses above the altar a painting from the Perugino school of paintings.
The city is 150 kms north of Rome, which takes only an hour and a half in the car using the A1 motorway and 100 kms from Florence which is only an hour’s drive. There is an excellent train service which takes you south to Rome or north to Milan from the main line Station at Chiusi- Chianciano which is only 5 kms away. There are even bus services which operate to many of the most important cities in Italy including Rome. It is also an excellent base from which to visit many of the most enchanting Medieval towns and villages that are to be found within this part of Italy such as Cetona, and San Casciano dei Bagni which is famous for its wonderful Thermal Spa centres and springs, Cortona, Pienza and Montepulciano, or alternatively some of the larger cities such as Perugia, Orvieto, Arezzo and Siena.
