Umbria

Umbria does not have a coastline, but besides this the landscape and the surroundings of the region resembles Tuscany. Umbria also has beautiful wavy hills that in the end blend in with the Apennine Mountains in the east. The many hills and mountains cast shadows over green river valleys with fruitful chestnut trees and elm forest dotted by the many, well preserved middle age villages situated on steep hilltops with fortresses, thick city walls, watch towers and narrow coble stones streets. Outside the cities there are castles and convents, many of them founded by local men who later became saints. As in many other catholic countries there are many churches and cathedrals depicting an architecture with frescos and carvings can take anyone’s breath away. Assisi, Spoleto, Norcia, Gubbio and Orvieto are all genuine examples of Umbrias fantastic middle age cities.

Most cities, except Terni and Perugia, in Umbria are small with somewhat 20-40 000 inhabitants. Throughout the year there are a great variety of different festivals and exhibitions being held in the region; everything from antic fairs, jazz-, onion-, food-, dragon flying- and tulip festivals to historic games and international street artist festival. This makes Umbria a perfect holiday destination, not just in the summer, but all year around.

If you wish to take a swim during your stay in Umbria, Lake Trasimeno is the place to go. The lake is 128 km2 and is surrounded by small and large villages, fortresses, fruit trees, wineyards and much more. In the distance you can sense the mountains. There are three islands in the lake that one can visit by boat. Lago Trasimeno attracts a lot of bathers. There are many beaches around the lake and it measures about 4 m deep on average; a fact that keeps the temperature nice and cool from May until September.
