Campania is a region in southern Italy, bordering Lazio to the northwest, Molise to the north, Apulia to the northeast, Basilicata to the east and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. The hinterland is largely mountainous, with irregular massifs broken here and there by valleys and plains. In front of Naples and Salerno lie the spectacular and enchanting islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida.

Campania is rich in culture, especially in regards to music, gastronomy, architecture, archaeological- and ancient sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. The rich natural sights of Campania make it highly attractive to tourism, particularly the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.

Positano, Amalfi Coast

Naples is the capital of Campania. Other important cities are Caserta, Benevento, Salerno and Avellino. Throughout much of its history Campania has been at the centre of Western Civilisation's most significant cultures. The area was colonised by Greeks and was part of Magna Græcia, until the Roman Republic began to dominate. During the Roman period the area was highly respected as a place of culture. During the Middle Ages the area had many duchies and principalities.

Today Campania is a very important and highly popular tourism destination, the high unemployment and crime rates do not seem to scare visitors from this beautiful region. The region has a population of over 5.8 million inhabitants; over half of the population is resident in the province of Naples, where there is a population density of 2,626 inhabitants per km2!

The climate is typically Mediterranean along the coast, whereas in the inner zones it is more continental, with low temperatures in winter. 51% of the total area is hilly, 34% mountainous and the remaining 15% is made up of plains. There is a high 'seismic' risk in the area of the region.
