Bisenti lies at 274 meters above sea level; about half way between the Adriatic Coast and the Gran Sasso Mountains by the Fino River. Legend has it that Bisenti was the birthplace of Ponzio Pilato, the man who crucified Jesus. It is unknown what became of the Roman prefect. Some say he committed suicide, others think he went back to his hometown. On his return, Pilate was busy building a sophisticated water supply system for his town, which survived to these days.
